Industrial Technologies Program
Aluminum

The U.S. Department of Energy’s Industrial Technologies Program (ITP) promotes the development of innovative technologies that strengthen the competitive position of the U.S. aluminum industry. This industry-led partnership, the Aluminum Industry of the Future, promotes technologies that optimize the use of energy and materials in operations and reduce wastes and energy-related emissions. The U.S. aluminum industry (including metal fabrication operations) employs more than 130,000 people, contributing more than $30 billion to the U.S. GNP.

The Industrial Technologies Program and members of the aluminum industry created a roadmap, Aluminum Industry Technology Roadmap (May 1997), to define the critical needs and priorities for meeting its near, mid, and long-term goals. Knowledgeable and experienced individuals representing a broad cross-section of the industry participated in the development of the roadmap. In addition, representatives of major suppliers, customers, and research organizations contributed valuable insight to the process. The aluminum industry has clearly defined technology barriers and performance targets for achieving its vision for the future.
