Feasibility of an Idaho Feedstock Supply System for Lignocellulosic Ethanol

Establishing the requirements for feedstock assembly processes to feed bioconversion processes is necessary for the development of cellulosic biorefineries. Biomass feedstock assembly comprises the activities and operations required to remove the biomass from the field and deliver it to the biomass conversion process. Linking feedstock harvest/collection/transport/storage (i.e., feedstock assembly) and preprocessing methods with conversion processes (i.e. cellulosic ethanol production) allows evaluation of technology options and trade-offs in the overall feedstock supply system. The reports and presentations below (links) summarize preliminary work the Idaho National Laboratory, growers and industry partners have done on a feedstock supply system designed to supply 800,000 tons of wheat and barley straw annually to a biorefinery.
