The INL is committed to developing an environment where individuals and teams are valued and inspired to contribute fully to our success. We strive to be recognized by our employees and our community as a diversity leader. Diversity in our workforce and community is critical to the success of the INL. Continuing to develop our diversity initiative will expand our base of knowledge, skills, abilities and understanding. We are committed to providing a workplace free from all forms of discrimination, including sexual harassment and other forms of harassment.
The INL is involved in various internal and external diversity programs including:
- INL Woman of the Year — In support of Women's History Month, DOE-ID and INL sponsors the annual INL Woman of the Year Award. The award honors a woman who has made significant contributions in furthering the INL's mission, goals and objectives and who has made outstanding contributions to the community.

- Summer Training and Employment Program for Students (STEPS) — The Summer Training and Employment Program for Students (STEPS) is inclusive of Women, Native American, African American, Asian, Latino students and students that are veterans or disabled. The STEPS program which has been implemented as part of the INL's Diversity Ideas & Initiatives is structured so that all students majoring in science, math, engineering, and other INL mission related technologies can serve as interns and take advantage of the work experience at the lab, in an effort to encourage students to complete their educational goals.
- Hispanic Youth Symposium (HYS) — HYS is an annual outreach effort, which encourages Latino teens to seek brighter futures for themselves and their families by staying in school.
