One of the six critical attributes in the transformation of Idaho National Laboratory is the revitalization of nuclear science and engineering education so INL can achieve the vision of becoming the pre-eminent nuclear energy and multiprogram national laboratory.
An INL key element of success is collaborative partnerships with academia. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) - a Battelle Energy Alliance team member and one of the world's leading nuclear science and engineering university - will help INL create the atmosphere of scientific inquiry and lead a National University Consortium. Also in collaboration with INL, the three Idaho research universities (the Idaho University Consortium) will support nuclear research and related education programs.
Education Programs, in partnership with regional or national colleges and universities, support the vision of INL. By linking academia with Department of Energy (DOE) laboratory facilities and INL scientists and engineers (mentors) in research and applied learning activities, Education Programs help meet the DOE and INL goals of fostering science and engineering literacy and of developing a future qualified work force.
INL has a long history of supporting university-level internships. The primary objective of the INL‛s Education Programs is to provide strategic leadership in education and laboratory-directed research activities. Working with students over the entire education continuum, INL Education Programs help to ensure a future work force that will carry on the long-term mission of INL.
Opportunities include:
- Undergraduate Internship
- Graduate Internship
- Postdoctoral Research Associate
- International Research Associate
Internship opportunities and other academic collaborations between academia and INL scientists and engineers increase the exchange of ideas, information and technology. These programs focus on bringing university students and faculty to INL, with particular emphasis on increasing the number of postdoctoral investigators at the laboratory. Other activities encourage participation of women and minorities in these opportunities. Collaborations with regional universities have resulted in numerous joint research initiatives between university faculty and students and INL researchers. INLs focus on employee education, internship programs, university outreach, and academic collaborations helps to ensure a future work force that will continue the long-term mission of INL.
The laboratory also supports and sponsors K-12 education programs to encourage pre-college students to pursue careers in science and energy fields.
