Since September 11th, 2001, career opportunities for college graduates in the field of national and homeland security has increased significantly. To assist students in meeting the requirements for this exciting and emerging field, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) established a scholarship and fellowship program for students pursuing higher education degrees.

Through both an education scholarship and fellowship opportunity, the program prepares students to meet the challenges of working in the science and technology community with an emphasis on instructing students to assist in achieving the missions and objectives of DHS including preventing, preparing, responding, and recovering from foreign and domestic acts of terrorism.

DHS application information and eligibility criteria are available here.

Fellowship Opportunities at Idaho National Laboratory (INL)

Students

Students gain hands on experience at INL

As a federal U.S. Department of Energy facility, INL supports the DHS scholarship initiative by providing students with a summer fellowship location to perform cutting edge research and technology development in the field of national and homeland security.

For more than half a century, INL has created products and developed solutions that are saving lives from the home front to the battlefield.

During World War II, INL was a proving ground for the U.S. Navy's long range artillery weapons. In the early 1950s the Laboratory designed and operated the Nautilus S1W, the prototype of the Navy's first nuclear submarine. In recent times, INL has become the lead manufacturer of heavy armor for the Army's M1-A1 Abrams tanks, developed systems for detecting explosives and nuclear materials in cargo trucks, and created a Critical Infrastructure Test Range where the nation's infrastructures can be tested and strengthened against acts of terrorism. For more than 55 years, INL has worked to improve the security of our country.

Today, the laboratory's national and homeland security objectives continue. Recent national and international events - from the War on Terrorism to the threat of nuclear weapons - have led INL to leverage its scientific expertise, engineering discipline and unique infrastructure assets to develop solutions to meet the daily challenges faced by our military, law enforcement, homeland security and intelligence communities.
