During 2006, Education Training and Research Partnerships (ETRP) established the Faculty/Staff Exchange Program (FSEP). This program supports the Idaho National Laboratory (INL) mission and the Strategic objectives.
FSEP provides support for important INL/university collaborations that are designed to bring close university involvement in the research, educational, and outreach activities of the laboratory. This funding can be used to initiate, continue, or enhance the interactions between INL and university researchers and students. This builds an academic network that enables unprecedented collaborations through its capacity and agility to mobilize talent, ideas, and interest in nuclear science and engineering, national security, and science and technology programs. In this way, state-of-the-art integrated educational resources, academic partnerships, and programs will connect university faculty and students to INL researchers and facilities.
Note: the funds can be used for collaboration, relationship building, developing research ideas, etc., but can not be used to fund the research itself
FSEP Objectives:
- To fully engage our Idaho University Consortium (IUC), National University Consortium (NUC), and other strategic university partners in collaborative activities of the Laboratory that will lead to planning, proposal development, and execution and dissemination of research
- To enable an increased number of university faculty, research staff, and students to spend significant parts of their year (at least 2 weeks or longer) gaining knowledge of INL programs that will lead to working on research of direct impact to the INL's mission
- Additionally, to enable an increased number of INL researchers to take assignments that involve spending significant portions of time at university campuses to teach, gain knowledge of university research and facilities, and be involved in campus life
Fiscal year 2007/2008 funds are available to support INL/university interactions that initiate, continue, or enhance collaborations between the Laboratory and university researches.
University researchers are invited to work with a laboratory researcher to send a mini-proposal (five-page limit) requesting FSEP support to Cheri.Miller@inl.gov. Proposals will be accepted throughout the year, but must be received at least 8 weeks prior to the desired interaction.
Include the following information in your proposal:
- Description of activity and participants with a preliminary budget estimate of costs broken out as labor, travel, and any other major cost categories
- Explanation of the expected benefits to the directorate and to the Laboratory
- Approval and support from INL manager and director
- Estimate of start and end dates
- Cost sharing is preferred. If cost sharing is available, include the amount or percentage of the total costs that your organization will provide and the amount or percentage requested from FSEP.
A review committee composed of representatives of the Associate Laboratory Directors and ETRP will consider all proposals. Funding for each proposal will be determined on a case-by-case basis. Collaborations with all universities are welcomed, but preferential consideration will be given to collaborations with IUC universities; Idaho State University, University of Idaho, and Boise State University and NUC universities; MIT, Oregon State University, Ohio State University, North Carolina State University, and University of New Mexico.
