Industrial Technologies Program
Forest Products

ITP’s Forest Products “Industries of the Future.” supports development, and deployment of new technologies that cut energy use, minimizing environmental impacts, and improving productivity in the industry. The forest products industry employs more than 1.3 million people and ranks among the top 10 manufacturing industries in 46 states.

Coordinated by the American Forest and Paper Association (AF&PA) in late 1994, forest products industry leaders created a vision of the industry in the year 2020. Known as Agenda 2020, the vision establishes long-term goals and broad research priorities for the forest products industry and provides the touchstone used in guiding program activities. The technology roadmap (referred to as the Implementation Plan) was developed by six industry-led task groups that oversee the research areas considered high-priority by industry.

For each research area, the Implementation Plan presents a “research pathway” for filling technology gaps and attaining specific results. AF&PA coordinates and oversees the work of the task groups, which represents the bulk of program implementation activities.
