Spectrum Catalogs
Samples

A new edition of the original Gamma-ray spectrum Catalogs has been prepared for presentation in electronic format. The incentive to expand and update the content and format of the Spectrum Catalogs resulted from the development of large-volume Ge detectors and a need for additional classes of spectral data to support new applications of gamma-ray spectrometry. Recent developments in information technology offer an opportunity to greatly enhance presentation of scientific material. The objective of this effort produced a new enhanced version of Ge(Li) - Si(Li) Catalog and a digitized version of the NaI(Li) Catalog. These catalogs are offered as a free resource from this site.

Conversion to Digital Format

The original Spectrum Catalogs contained tutorial text material, spectra, and precise gamma-ray energy and intensity measurements for over 300 radionuclides. These reference documents are a familiar sight in most spectrometry laboratories. To produce the new editions in a format suitable for presentation in electronic format it was necessary to :

  1. convert the plotted spectra, tutorial text, and decay data to digital format,
  2. update related decay data using the Evaluated Nuclear Structure Data File (ENSDF)
  3. generate decay scheme graphics, and
  4. convert all data to the Adobe Acrobat (PDF) format for web access.

Expanded and Updated Content

Future additions to the content of the Catalogs will include:

  1. decay schemes in integrated format, suitable for monitor display,
  2. decay data from current ENSDF files,
  3. spectra representing the response of large-volume Ge detectors to individual radionuclides, and
  4. (n,),and (n,n') reaction spectra.

This second phase will include new spectral plots and synthesized spectra calculated using Monte Carlo and parametric modeling techniques to generate detector response functions for monoenergetic gamma-radiation. These data will then be combined with current evaluated decay data to generate spectra for large-volume Ge(Li) - Si(Li) detectors.

Examples of the content of the current edition of the Ge(Li) and Si(Li) Catalog follows.
