The Glass Industry of the Future facilitates the development and demonstration of advanced energy efficiency and clean production technologies as well as new technologies having the potential for significant market potential. The American glass industry is responsible for technological advancements that have been adapted for use worldwide and dramatically improve the quality of life for millions of people. Glass is an important component of the U.S. economy, employing more than 150,000 people in skilled jobs, and generating more than 21 million tons of consumer products each year with an estimated value of $22 billion.
In January 1996, the glass industry published a report entitled “Glass: A Clear Vision for a Bright Future,” which articulated the industry’s vision of its future. Several organizations representing the glass industry signed a compact with the Department of Energy in April 1996. This compact set the foundation for collaborative efforts between the industry and the federal government. Signed by both key industry spokesmen and Department of Energy officials, it was a formal commitment to align DOE’s limited resources to meet the challenges identified in the vision.
