Hispanic Youth Symposium

The Hispanic Youth Symposium (HYS) is an annual event designed to encourage Hispanic teens to seek brighter futures for themselves and their families by staying in school. Using a bilingual format, the Symposium has three primary goals:

  • Mentoring/drop-out prevention;
  • Pride in Latino culture/history;
  • Encouraging students to pursue higher education;

The symposium brings together Hispanic high school students from throughout Idaho to listen to motivational speakers and to participate in interactive workshops designed to enhance self-esteem, leadership and problem-solving skills, as well as to examine possible career paths for the future. The students compete in speech, talent, athletic and interactive skill contests for awards and scholarships.

The INL’s Hispanic Youth Symposium has been recognized by the governor as exemplary in helping Idaho’s families and children.

The Hispanic Youth Symposium features keynote speakers each year with national recognition who deliver messages of hope, inspiration and motivation. The featured speaker at the 2007 Symposium was Patrick Perez.
