The K-12 Programs reflect the science, engineering, and technology mission areas of the INL. It is an investment in the next generation workforce such that a talent pool for science and engineering is increased. Programs the INL support are:
- DOE Pre-Service Teacher (PST) Internships — provides ten-week summer research appointments for pre-service teachers who plan to teach mathematics, science or technology in K-12 schools
- Education and Research Transfer Program — providing excess, educationally-useful federal equipment to help every possible K-12 child in Idaho's public, private, and parochial schools acquire the skills needed to succeed in the information-intensive 21st century
- The Mini Grants program is designed to recognize and support excellence in teaching by providing funds to enhance public and private elementary, middle school, and high school science, mathematics, and technology programs.
- Scholastic Tournament — giving Idaho students an opportunity to participate in the annual DOE national science bowl
- Science and Engineering Expo — exposes students, teachers, and parents to a wide and diverse range of potential careers in science, mathematics, engineering, and technology
- Student Action Teams (SAT) in Science, Mathematics, Engineering, and Technology — placing teachers and high school students in teams on research problems working with INL researchers
- Teaming Teachers with INL (TTI) — placing pre-service and practicing teachers with INL researchers working on research problems
