As previously noted, the defense sector has been the primary funding source for many intelligent system and robotic technology initiatives, particularly in the area of unmanned vehicles. To date, much of this robotic-related funding has focused on Unmanned Aerial Vehicle- (UAV) or Unmanned Aerial System- (UAS) based technologies. As this UAV-centered technology base begins to mature, however, a greater focus will be placed on the development of a diverse array of unmanned vehicles, particularly Unmanned Ground Vehicles (UGV). Indeed, with time, UGVs may become the robotic workhorse of the military. Currently, INL is well-positioned to assist customers with this emerging UGV need. INL has recently completed a successful and critical demonstration of its Intelligence Kernel Software via an Autonomous Robotic Countermine (ARCS) demonstration.
