Contaminated soils are a widespread problem throughout the DOE complex. Often, the cleanup of these sites involves ex situ (e.g., excavate, and treat or dispose) remedies. For the purpose of the SSR, the in situ remediation of contaminated soils and the role contaminated soils underground as a source for groundwater contamination are considered important. Research is proposed to investigate rhizosphere processes in support of the development of more effective approaches for phytoremediation. The initial focus will be on rhizosphere interactions that influence the mobility of cesium. A specific INL site has not been identified as a focus for this research. There will be additional research campaigns addressing different issues related to contaminated soils.
