America's investment in technology research, development and demonstration at the Idaho National Laboratory produces unique capabilities and a diverse portfolio of technologies, which advance the Nation's solutions in energy, national security, and environmental stewardship. Through collaboration with industry partners, INL's Technology Transfer and Commercialization office makes available to American agencies and international organizations unique facilities and expertise.
In 2005, INL began pursuing a significantly expanded vision to foster academic, industry, government, and international collaboration aimed at producing vibrant investment, growing research and advanced expertise.
Transferring technology to the commercial sector is a responsibility of each DOE laboratory in support of U.S. industrial competitiveness and the INL has hundreds of technologies and capabilities to make available. We also provide technical assistance to local industry and community organizations and share technology across the DOE complex and among other federal agencies to maximize use of laboratory technology.
Throughout its history of successful industrial partnership, INL is leveraging its unique technical resources available through industrial partnerships. The INL uses a variety of flexible partnership mechanisms to advance technology development and to establish industrial partnerships that in turn benefit INL, DOE and the partner.
INL contributes significantly to the nation in its primary mission of energy research and national and homeland security. The expansion of these partnerships offer exceptional benefits which include:
- Increased technical breadth and depth of laboratory staff available to national missions,
- Leverages federal research, development and demonstration,
- Reduction of cost to taxpayers by using funding from other sources, and
- Enhances competitiveness for U.S. companies.
Through technology transfer partnerships, INL becomes far more cost-effective and leverages research, technology development and increases the skills and capabilities for America's government and private businesses.
If you would like to license an INL technology, share in R&D, start or expand a business with INL technologies, or require business support our technology transfer team is happy to form a business partnership using the following contractual mechanisms below.
- Cooperative Research and Development Agreements (CRADAs): CRADAs allow INL and one or more non-federal partners to collaborate and develop and INL technology or apply INL expertise in advancing a technology belonging to a non-federal party.
- Licensing: The licensing mechanism allows INL to transfer partial ownership interest in technology or software intellectual property to another party while retaining the title. At times, a license is granted to a business started by INL personnel who leave the laboratory to commercialize the technology. These businesses are known as spin-off companies.
- Work for Others (WFO): WFO offers non-Department of Energy parties (other federal agencies, private sector companies and international organizations) access to INL on a contract research basis.
- Technical Assistance Program: This program supports other tiers of government and regional businesses with help on important technical issues where the expertise is not otherwise available.
