Researchers at the INL have developed an alternative approach for using liquid hydrogen to fuel vehicles which uses a combination of a charging pump and chemical hydrogen generation technique to produce high pressure gas. The process provides an inexpensive way to produce liquid hydrogen from hydride powders. Liquefaction can be performed at the fueling station to further reduce transportation and distribution costs. The end goal is to provide liquid hydrogen at costs comparable to gasoline, which has been the main difficulty in shifting to hydrogen fuel.
