This patented process uses a creative approach for nitration of aromatics and/or nitroaromatic compounds in a carbon dioxide mediated solvent. This new process eliminates the need to use sulfuric acid and effectively reduces the amount of environmental waste generated from nitration reactions while simultaneously eliminating production of "red water" commonly found in TNT synthesis.
