This INL invention was developed to provide an automated multi-function feedback control sensor for welding that is independent of significant operator interaction, and is capable of measuring weld pool position and width, sensor-to-work piece distance and weld bead centerline cooling rate. The sensor consists of a computer-automated system using a single charged coupled device (CCD) image to measure weld pool position, width and discrete temperature normal to molten weld pool/solidified weld bead interface.
