The need to stop a vehicle without causing damage to non-offending vehicles or people has long been a concern for law enforcement. Tire deflation devices (also known as “spike strips”) typically use multiple spikes deployed across a road in the path of fleeing vehicle. The drawback of some designs is the inadvertent damage to non-offending vehicles, such as a police vehicle pursuing a suspect vehicle. The Idaho National Laboratory has developed a patented technology that eliminates this problem while maintaining the versatility of a portable barrier strip. INL is offering the opportunity to license patents for a portable tire deflation device with a retractable tire-puncture feature for deflating tires on vehicles. License rights to the U.S. patents may be issued on an exclusive or nonexclusive basis.
