Idaho National Laboratory

INL Transformation

INL’s strategy commits the lab to make important contributions in nuclear energy, national and homeland security, and science and technology. As a consequence, we are transforming our leadership, infrastructure, culture, processes, citizenry and the way we interface with our customers.

Transformation changes will result in better innovation, increased productivity and a better environment in which to work. When we have completed the transformation in 2008, world-class management systems will be in place.

How will we do this? It begins with modifying our business management systems so everything is geared toward accomplishing work while remaining compliant with our customer's requirements. We are aligning our business tools, procedures and processes to better accomplish our strategic research and development mission. This also entails modifying the job expectations of all employees - scientists, engineers, technicians, craft workers and support staff - so all of our work is tied to our new strategic research and development vision.

Through the leadership of the Laboratory Systems Transformation Office, we have identified how Battelle Energy Alliance will dramatically change the current approach to management of Idaho National Laboratory - while continuing to meet customer requirements. A primary objective of the transformation office is to transfer the Battelle experience, knowledge and insights in laboratory management to INL and its work force.

Six attributes are critical to our vision:

  • World-leading nuclear science and technology programs
  • National/Homeland Security, Energy and Environmental programs that leverage our nuclear capabilities
  • A robust science base
  • A central role in revitalizing nuclear S&T and engineering education in the United States
  • Extensive collaborations with the world's premier academic, government and industrial nuclear S&T organizations
  • Forefront research facilities, support infrastructure and management systems
  • The pressing challenge for nuclear energy sets the context for the INL strategy. We aim to create a technically achievable, economically competitive and environmentally sustainable nuclear energy option for the nation that earns public confidence and trust.

As we transform the laboratory, we will move from an institution with individual pockets of excellence to one with a reputation as the pre-eminent national lab renowned for its capabilities and performance on nuclear energy and national and energy security. We will change our infrastructure from a mixture of aging and newer facilities to one with a world-class portfolio of premier facilities. In short, we will move from a position of being a player to a position of leadership, where we will influence, impact, and shape the future of international and national nuclear energy policy.

Our workplace culture change will become evident and measurable as we demonstrate leadership in innovation, scientific eminence, safety, research and development productivity, and public trust and confidence.

This is an exciting time at Idaho National Laboratory. We have big plans. Stay tuned as we transform ourselves to better serve the nation.
