Utah educators to collaborate with INL at 2015 STEM U Summer Institute

IDAHO FALLS – Soon Utah K-12 educators and Idaho National Laboratory (INL) employees will collaborate on training opportunities and resources to expand their knowledge about science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) topics and how to use the information in their classrooms.

As a longtime supporter of STEM education, INL is co-sponsoring the 2015 STEM U Summer Institute where the Idaho STEM (i-STEM) program will be introduced to participants. The i-STEM program is a nationally and internationally recognized STEM professional development model that helps educators integrate new ideas, methods and technologies into their curriculum.

The 2015 STEM U Summer Institute, held Aug. 4-7 at Utah State University, will provide participants with training, curriculum, classroom resources, materials, continuing education credits and connections to STEM experts.

“We’re looking forward to working with our Utah colleagues to replicate the i-STEM model and offer large-scale professional development opportunities for educators,” said Anne Seifert, executive director of i-STEM and INL’s K-12 education coordinator. “STEM topics are increasingly important as educators prepare students to become participating and contributing members of today’s global society.”

2015 STEM U participants from across Utah will then act as STEM advocates in their school district to help other teachers become more confident in teaching STEM subjects and also to raise awareness of the needs for future STEM workforces like those at INL.

More information about the i-STEM program is available at www.sde.idaho.gov/site/istem or registration information for attending the 2015 STEM U Summer Institute can be found at http://www.csf.usu.edu/stem_u.
